TOURISM

During your stay in Zagreb we recommend a visit to our city, the capital of Croatia and country’s cultural, economic, university, political and administrative centre.
The most important sights making Zagreb one of the most beautiful cities in the Europe are:
- Ban Jelačić Square – the centre of the city and the most popular meeting point of our residents. The square represents a mixture of classicism, neo-baroque, renaissance and modernism. East of the statue there is the Manduševac Fountain, bearing the legend on how the city got its name. According to one of the legends, one day a city ruler returned from the battle and asked a girl to scoop him some water from the lake saying: ZAGRABI, MANDO (eng. Scoop it, Manda). And that is how the fountain came to be named Manduševac, and the city Zagreb.
- The Cathedral of St. Stefan was destroyed several times and reconstructed in the neo-Gothic style by a famous architect Herman Bole. Its elegant towers (105 m high) are symbols of the city.
- Every day a cannon is fired from the top of the Lotrščak Tower exactly at noon.
- Other sights that you should visit: Kamenita vrata (Stone Gate), Crkva svete Katarine (St. Catherine’s Church), Trg kralja Tomislava (King Tomislav Square), Museum Mimara, Zagreb Stock Exchange, Trg burze, Tkalčićeva Street, Gornji grad, Donji grad, St. Mark’s Square, Croatian National Theatre, Museum of Archeology etc.

Jarun: a sports and leisure centre, located near the River Sava. It was built in 1987 for the University Games. There are two lakes: Small and Big Lake. In the middle of the lake there are 5 islands with pebble beaches connected by bridges. Zagreb’s residents call it “Zagreb’s Sea”. At the Jarun Lake there are numerous tracks for cycling, roller-skating and hiking. Jarun is also a home to many species of birds, fish and insects. Around the lake there are many restaurants, bars and night clubs.

Sljeme: the highest peak (1.035 m) of the mountain Medvednica, which is also a nature park. In the winter it is ideal for skiing (during the day and at night), and in summer for hiking all the way to the peak. There is also a gondola that takes visitors to the top of the mountain and its restaurants. Sljeme is one of the reasons why Zagreb is also called a white city. Croatian skiers (Janica and Ivica Kostelić) train on Sljeme.
