Castles
Trakošćan castle is one of the most beautiful, romantic and best preserved castles in Croatia. It was built in 13. century as a defense system for the north-western part of Croatia. According to the legende Trakoščan got its name from the Roman times fortress "arx Thacorum ".

Maruševac Castle/Palace is also a beautiful example of the Romanic neo-Gothic Castle/Palace. Castle Maruševac dates back in 1547. Owned by the Vragović family at that time. Castle changed its owner through history and Count Schlippenbach gave him looks its got today.

Veliki Tabor Castle is dominating the southwestenmost part of Hrvatsko Zagorje. It is the ancient fortress of the Ratkay counts from the fifteenth century. There is a theory that the Castle stands on top of an island of what was once the Panonian Sea. Another story says, that, where the Castle stands today there was a Roman fortress in the 2nd century. The fact is that the part of the tower was built in the 12th century, while the semicircular towers, which render complete the beauty of the Castle, where built in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Miljana Castle/ Palace, a picturesque country residence of the Ratkay counts, is an example of the love and care given to the preservation of historical heritage. It was carefully renewed and enriched with a valuable inventory. If we were asked to name the most picturesque manor in Zagorje we should almost certainly say Miljana, the manor of the old aristocratic Ratkaj family. It lies not far from the village of Veliki Tabor, the seat of the Ratkajs, on a little hill near the Sutla, ten kilometres north of Kumrovec. Miljana is today among those places in Zagorje that must be visited.
